11.18.11 - SF'SS Young Folks Edition presented by the Peadpod Arts & Music Academy

We hosted the the Peapod Art and Music Academy premiere of there short film Love, Life and Hate.  The film was directed by a group 13-14 year olds that live in Watts.  They interviewed other teenagers in there neighborhood to create a short documentary about the things they deal with in love, life and hate in 2011.  I was really proud and blown away by what they presented.  With students like these the future is so bright.  Watch them all below.

The Peapod Arts & Music Academy was founded by the Black Eyed Peas, each year students who go throught the academy create a thesis project they present at their graduation...these films are one of the things the amazing students completed during their time at Peapod.

2.2.2011 - SF'SS our new Short Film Screening Series

Were happy to announce our first original programming starts in 2011!  Fist up is our Short Film Screening Series SF'SS happens the evening of February 2.

So the general principle behind SF'SS is to continue the process of further engaging our audience.  Because we are in LA and so many of the people who visit our space are creatives that work in Hollywood it seemed like a very appropriate thing to initiate.  In art even for those that do not work in the film industry, the usage of film and video is becoming a more popular tool in ways of extracting, creating and displaying it.

A little about the filmmakers:
Julian Breece is really a dynamic and forward thinking film maker.  We are screening his short "The Young and Evil" which went to Sundance in 2009 and did well.  It is the story of a young man who embraces his inner demons and consciously lives a self destructive life.  Julian was also a creator and directed the very popular original BET webseries "Buppies" which starred Tatyana Ali.
Jameel Saleem well what can I say about a man who literally does everything.  Jameel is amazing at his will to create.  The short we are screening from him is really quite awesome.  Its Jameel's take on sci-fi called "The Outsider People" and was written and directed by him.  Visit Jameel at http://jameelsaleem.com to keep up with his many productions.
Michelle Joan Papillion is me!  I am an artist and acting and film making is an extension of my art.  I guess you could say I created Papillion Institute of Art just as much for myself as I did for other artists.  I am debuting a series of short docs called Love Stories.  The idea was originally created by will.i.am and sponsored by Blackberry.  These mini documentaries go deeper than the title that our interviewees wear.  We ask why they continue to do what they do.
James Bland is a young up and coming film maker, like the others mentioned he writes and directs his films and is as passionate about the business of film making as he is about the art of it.  His film is a romantic comedy called Cocoa Love about a woman who wants to have a proper funeral for her dog Cocoa and won't be happy until it happens.
